Lead-acid Battery Positive Paste

 

Lead-acid batteries have low power and energy densities. This is not only due to the high density of lead and its compounds, but also to low active material utilization, particularly in the positive electrode. For automotive-grade thin plates, the utilization rate is typically around 48% to 55%. Furthermore, the battery's service life is largely dependent on the positive electrode. In recent years, research using additives to improve the utilization and lifespan of positive electrode active materials has achieved some success.

 

The reasons for low positive electrode active material utilization include: ① The reaction product, lead sulfate, a poor conductor, encapsulates lead dioxide, preventing materials within the lead dioxide particles from participating in the reaction; ② The electrode reaction preferentially occurs on the electrode surface. Lead sulfate, with a larger molar volume than lead dioxide, blocks the pores of the porous electrode, preventing the reactant sulfuric acid from diffusing deeply into the porous electrode, leaving a large amount of unreacted materials inside the electrode; ③ The discharge product, lead sulfate, increases the battery's internal resistance during discharge.

 

Additives that improve the utilization of positive electrode active material include: ① Conductive additives such as carbon materials and anisotropic graphite, tin oxide-coated glass flakes, and conductive metal oxides; ② Additives that increase the supply of positive electrode acid such as carboxymethyl cellulose, hollow glass microspheres, and synthetic fibers; ③ Other functional additives such as bismuth and its oxides.

 

Additives that improve the cycle life of positive electrodes include: ① Phosphoric acid and its salts: They slow the softening rate of the positive electrode active material and reduce its shedding, thereby increasing the battery's cycle life; they improve the bond between the grid material and corrosion products, preventing the formation of a lead sulfate barrier layer; and they can inhibit oxygen evolution; ② Cobalt sulfate: Cobalt ions increase the density of the grid corrosion film, thereby strengthening the bond between the grid and the active material, thereby inhibiting softening and shedding of the active material; and ③ Fiber materials: They increase the strength of the plate and prevent damage during processing.
