According to a recent report from the American Physicists' Organization website, scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory and Los Alamos National Laboratory have developed a new transparent film that can absorb light and convert it into electricity over a large area. This film, made from semiconductors and fullerenes, features a microcellular structure. The research, published in the latest issue of the Journal of Materials Chemistry, suggests that this technology could be used to develop transparent solar panels and even windows that generate electricity. The material consists of a semiconducting polymer doped with carbon fullerenes. Under strictly controlled conditions, it can self-assemble from a micrometer-scale hexagonal structure to a multi-millimeters-wide surface covered in microcellular structures.

Miccia Cartwright, a physical chemist at Brookhaven National Laboratory's Center for Multifunctional Nanomaterials, who led the research, said that while the honeycomb film is made using a process similar to that used for traditional polymer materials (such as polystyrene), this is the first time that semiconductors and fullerenes have been used to absorb light and generate electrical charge.

The material maintains its apparent transparency because the polymer chains are tightly connected only to the edges of the hexagons, while the rest of the structure is simpler, becoming increasingly thinner outward from the connection point. This structure serves as a connector while also having a strong ability to absorb light, facilitating electrical conduction. The remaining sections are relatively thin and transparent, primarily serving to transmit light.
