Working Principle and Structure of Silicon Solar Cells
The principle of solar cell power generation is primarily based on the photoelectric effect of semiconductors. When impurities such as boron and phosphorus are doped into a silicon crystal, the addition of boron creates a vacancy in the crystal. The positive charge represents the silicon atom, while the negative charge represents the four electrons surrounding it.
Because a boron atom has only three electrons surrounding it, a vacancy is created. This vacancy is unstable due to the lack of an electron and easily absorbs electrons to neutralize it, forming a P-type semiconductor.
Similarly, when phosphorus atoms are added, one electron becomes highly active because it has five electrons, forming an N-type semiconductor.
P-type semiconductors contain more vacancies, while N-type semiconductors contain more electrons. Consequently, when P-type and N-type semiconductors are combined, a potential difference is formed at the interface, forming a PN junction.
When P-type and N-type semiconductors are combined, a special thin layer forms at the interface between the two semiconductors. The P-type side of the interface is negatively charged, while the N-type side is positively charged. This is because P-type semiconductors have more holes, while N-type semiconductors have more free electrons, resulting in a concentration difference. Electrons in the N region diffuse into the P region, and holes in the P region diffuse into the N region. Once diffused, an "internal electric field" is formed from the N region to the P region, which prevents further diffusion. When equilibrium is reached, a special thin layer is formed, creating a potential difference, which is the PN junction.
