A lithium-ion battery is composed of interconnected lithium-ion cells, which are the individual components forming the entire battery.

The voltage of a lithium-ion cell varies depending on its specific chemical type. For example, a single lithium iron phosphate cell, typically has a nominal output voltage ranging from 3.2 to 3.8 volts. However, many lithium-ion batteries commonly have standard voltages of 12, 24, or 48 volts.

When cells are connected in series, their voltages add up. For instance, four cells connected in series will create a 12-volt battery, and eight cells in series form a 24-volt battery, and so on.

Additionally, it is possible to connect lithium-ion cells in parallel, which increases the overall capacity of the battery. When cells are connected in parallel, their capacities (and batteries) combine, resulting in a longer lifespan. For example, two cells connected in parallel will have a lifespan that is approximately twice as long as a single cell.
A lithium battery's interior consists of a number of lithium-ion cells that are connected by wires in series and parallel as well as a battery management system, or BMS.
