The Impact of Temperature on Lithium Batteries


Of all environmental factors, temperature has the greatest impact on the charge and discharge performance of lithium batteries. The electrochemical reactions at the electrode/electrolyte interface are related to ambient temperature, and this interface is considered the heart of a lithium battery. If the temperature drops, the electrode reaction rate also decreases. Assuming the battery voltage remains constant, the discharge current decreases, and the battery's power output also decreases. If the temperature rises, the opposite occurs: the battery's power output increases. Temperature also affects the electrolyte transport rate: increasing temperatures accelerate transport, while decreasing temperatures slow it, affecting the battery's charge and discharge performance. However, temperatures exceeding 45°C (114°F) can disrupt the chemical equilibrium within the battery, leading to side reactions. The discharge efficiency of nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal hydride batteries decreases significantly at low temperatures (e.g., below -15°C). At -20°C (-114°F), the alkaline solution reaches its freezing point, significantly slowing the battery's charging speed. Charging at low temperatures below zero (0°C) increases the battery's internal pressure and may trigger the safety valve to open. In order to charge effectively, the ambient temperature should be between 5 and 30 degrees Celsius. Generally, the charging efficiency will increase with the increase of temperature, but when the temperature rises above 45 degrees Celsius, the performance of the lithium battery material will degrade under high temperature, and the cycle life of the lithium battery will be greatly shortened.
