Dissolution electricity generates electromotive force
Positive plate: PbO₂ is an alkaline oxide. It reacts with sulfuric acid to form lead persulfate [Pb(SO₄)₂] and H₂O, resulting in a redox reaction (ionization):
Lead persulfate is unstable and decomposes into Pb₄+ and 2SO₄₂-, namely:
Pb₄+ precipitates on the positive plate, while SO₄₂- dissolves into the electrolyte. Therefore, the positive plate has a potential of +2.0V relative to the electrolyte (reference point). The positive and negative ions that ionize first will respectively hinder the positive and negative ions that ionize later. As ionization proceeds, ionization and back-ionization reach equilibrium.
Negative plate: According to the principle of electrode potential, metallic lead, under the dissolution tension of the sulfuric acid solution, dissolves Pb₂+ into the electrolyte, leaving 2e₂ at the negative electrode, namely:
Pb → Pb₂++2e₂
Thus, the negative plate has a potential of approximately -0.1V relative to the electrolyte (reference point). The ions and electrons that dissolve first will hinder the ions and electrons that dissolve later, respectively. As dissolution proceeds, dissolution and reverse dissolution will reach equilibrium. Therefore, the battery will generate an electromotive force E, which is: E = 2.0V - [-0.1V] = 2.1V.
