A Case Study of PV Energy Storage System Configuration Strategies
An economic analysis of the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) is also crucial. When the increase in power generation corresponding to the additional unit capacity investment fails to offset the increase in costs, the optimal configuration has been reached.
Take a typical off-grid household system design as an example: a user's average daily load is 25 kWh, the local area has an average daily effective sunlight duration of 5 hours, and the energy storage configuration is 50 kWh (enabling 48 hours of backup power). In this case, the PV module power should be calculated based on "daily load / sunshine duration × efficiency margin": (25 kWh / 5 hours) × 1.3 = 6.5 kW. A configuration of 14 500W modules can achieve supply and demand balance. However, blindly increasing the power to 10 kW would theoretically increase power generation to 50 kWh, but due to the capacity limitations of the energy storage unit, the maximum amount of energy that can be stored per day would still be 50 kWh. This means that, outside of three consecutive days of sunny weather, 42.9% of the module investment would become redundant.
