They allow homeowners to store and use the electricity produced by their solar panels during periods of low or no sunlight, such as at night or during cloudy days.

Dye-sensitized solar cells
The dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) is a recently developed new type of solar cell. Also known as the Grötzel cell, the DSSC was first published by Grötzel et al. in 1991. Its structure differs from conventional photovoltaic cells. Its substrate is typically glass, but it can also be a transparent, flexible polymer foil. A transparent conducting oxide (TCO), typically FTO (SnO2:F), is applied to the glass. A layer of porous nano-sized TiO2 particles (approximately 10-20 nm) is then grown to form a nanoporous film approximately 10 microns thick. A dye is then applied to the TiO2 particles. The dye is typically a ruthenium polypyridyl complex. The upper electrode, in addition to being made of glass and TCO, is also coated with platinum, which acts as a catalyst for the electrolyte reaction. The space between the two electrodes is filled with an iodide/triiodide electrolyte. Although the current maximum conversion efficiency of DSC cells is around 12% (theoretical maximum is 29%), the manufacturing process is simple, so it is generally believed that it will significantly reduce production costs and also reduce the electricity cost per kilowatt-hour.
