Currently, the average efficiency of mass-produced single-crystal and multicrystalline silicon solar cells is around 15%. This means that these cells convert only 15% of incident sunlight into usable electricity, with the remaining 85% being wasted as useless heat. Strictly speaking, current solar cells are also a form of "energy waste." In theory, by effectively suppressing the energy exchange between carriers and phonons within the solar cell-in other words, effectively inhibiting the release of energy within or between carrier energy bands-the generation of useless heat within the solar cell can be effectively avoided, significantly improving solar cell efficiency and even achieving ultra-high efficiency. While this simple theoretical concept can be implemented in practice, various methods are employed. The development of ultra-high-efficiency solar cells (third-generation solar cells) not only utilizes novel device structural designs to overcome physical limitations, but also potentially achieves significant increases in conversion efficiency through the introduction of new materials.

 

Thin-film solar cells include amorphous silicon, CdTe, and CIGS (copper indium gallium selenide) cells.
