Silicon Solar Cells
Silicon solar cells are categorized into three types: monocrystalline silicon solar cells, polycrystalline silicon thin-film solar cells, and amorphous silicon thin-film solar cells.
Monocrystalline silicon solar cells have the highest conversion efficiency and the most mature technology. The highest conversion efficiency in the laboratory is 24.7%, while the efficiency in mass production is 15%. They still dominate large-scale applications and industrial production, but due to the high cost of monocrystalline silicon, significant cost reductions are difficult. To conserve silicon material, polycrystalline silicon thin-film and amorphous silicon thin-film solar cells have been developed as alternatives to monocrystalline silicon solar cells.
Compared to monocrystalline silicon, polycrystalline silicon thin-film solar cells are less expensive and more efficient than amorphous silicon thin-film solar cells. Their highest laboratory conversion efficiency is 18%, while the efficiency in industrial production is 10%. Therefore, polycrystalline silicon thin-film solar cells will soon dominate the solar cell market.
Amorphous silicon thin-film solar cells are low-cost, lightweight, have high conversion efficiency, are easy to mass-produce, and have great potential. However, they are limited by the photoelectric efficiency decay effect caused by their material, resulting in low stability, which directly affects their practical application. If the stability problem can be further solved and the conversion rate problem can be improved, then amorphous silicon solar cells will undoubtedly be one of the main development products of solar cells.
