Multi-component compound thin-film solar cells are made of inorganic salts, primarily including gallium arsenide III-V compounds, cadmium sulfide, and copper indium selenide thin-film cells.

Cadmium sulfide and cadmium telluride polycrystalline thin-film cells offer higher efficiency than amorphous silicon thin-film solar cells, lower cost than single-crystalline silicon cells, and are easier to mass-produce. However, due to the highly toxic nature of cadmium, it poses a significant environmental risk. Therefore, they are not an ideal alternative to crystalline silicon solar cells.

Gallium arsenide (GaAs) III-V compound cells can achieve conversion efficiencies of up to 28%. GaAs compound materials have an ideal optical band gap and high absorption efficiency, strong radiation resistance, and are insensitive to heat, making them suitable for manufacturing high-efficiency single-junction cells. However, the high cost of GaAs material has significantly limited its widespread use.

Copper indium selenide thin-film cells (CIS) are suitable for photoelectric conversion, are immune to light-induced degradation, and offer conversion efficiencies comparable to polycrystalline silicon. With their low cost, excellent performance, and simple manufacturing processes, they are poised to become a key development direction for solar cell development. The only problem is the source of the materials. Since indium and selenium are relatively rare elements, the development of this type of battery is inevitably limited.
