Spain's electricity demand is expected to increase by 33%-54% by 2030, requiring €4.6-6.3 billion in grid upgrades and expansion.

According to the "Electricity Demand and Grid Investment 2025-2035" report, jointly released by EY and the Spanish Institute of Technology, Spain's electricity demand is expected to grow by 33%-54% by 2030, reaching 305.8-360.8 TWh. By 2035, the cumulative increase is projected to reach 64%-105%, with peak demand reaching 479.8 TWh. Meanwhile, national installed capacity is projected to increase by up to 312 GW.

The study, through modeling analysis, indicates that the industrial sector and emerging energy demand centers will be the primary drivers. Specifically, the electrification of industrial processes below 400°C will contribute 129 TWh of demand by 2035. The residential sector will continue to transform due to the widespread adoption of high-efficiency heat pumps and the expansion of electric vehicles. Emerging demand drivers such as green hydrogen, data centers, port electrification, desalination, and public charging infrastructure are expected to add over 170 TWh.

Spanish Energy Secretary Joan Groizard revealed at the Solar Energy Forum on Wednesday that 45 GW of power capacity has been approved, 10 GW of which will be used for data center construction. The report emphasizes that to cope with the surge in electricity demand, Spain's distribution network will need to invest between €4.586 billion and €6.313 billion by 2030, with the specific amount depending on the actual growth path of electricity demand.
