VRLA batteries are used to power HEVs, currently limited to mild hybrids with a battery voltage of 36V. Only Ni-MH batteries are officially used in medium and full hybrid HEVs (see Table 3). These HEVs are characterized by partial state of charge (PSoC) battery operation. The primary failure mode of VRLA batteries in PSoC is severe sulfation of the negative electrode. Hard, coarse PbSO₄ crystals form on the negative electrode surface, hindering the diffusion of H₂SO₄ into the negative electrode and preventing the battery from discharging. ALABC, a collaborative effort led by Australia's CSIRO and the US company Hawker, conducted several years of research on VRLA power batteries, proposing a solution. Over two years of road testing in HEVs such as the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight have proven successful, demonstrating excellent performance and successfully replacing Ni-MH batteries with spiral-wound VRLA batteries.
