France funds 55MW energy storage pilot project in Togo, promoting 5GW of battery energy storage deployment in Africa
The French Development Agency and the Global Energy Alliance Initiative have jointly invested $200,000 to support a battery energy storage system pilot project in the Togolese Republic. The announcement was made during the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
This funding will facilitate the construction of a 55MW battery energy storage pilot project, a model that can be replicated across Africa and support the development of a national energy storage development plan for Togo. The Togolese government aims to achieve universal electricity access by 2030, as approximately 40% of the population currently lacks reliable electricity supply. Furthermore, the government aims to increase renewable energy generation to 50% of total electricity generation by 2025 to reduce reliance on imported energy. Battery energy storage technology is considered a key component of the clean energy transition.
The project is part of the Battery Energy Storage System Alliance, a global alliance of 30 countries dedicated to deploying 5GW of energy storage capacity by 2030. Last month, the Togolese government signed the Energy Pact and joined Mission 300, a joint World Bank-African Development Bank initiative that aims to provide electricity to 300 million people in 17 African countries by 2030.
