Brazil Raises Import Tariffs on Certain Energy Storage Batteries to 25% at the Request of Domestic Manufacturers
Responding to a request from domestic battery manufacturer LETEC, the Brazilian government has raised the import tariff on specific 48V lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries from 18% to 25%. This tariff rate applies to stationary energy storage battery system applications involving telecommunications base stations and photovoltaic (PV) systems with a capacity not exceeding 4.8 kW; it is effective from May 19, 2026, through May 18, 2027. Other lithium-ion batteries falling under the same customs classification will retain the preferential tariff rate of 18%.
This tariff adjustment stems from a petition for a tax increase submitted in February 2025 by domestic manufacturer UCB, a move supported by companies such as WEG, Enersys, and Moura. The measure was implemented through Brazil's temporary tariff exception mechanism, designed to safeguard sensitive industries and enhance their competitiveness.
BLOO POWER, a leading provider offering competitive battery energy storage system price and high-quality battery energy storage system for sale, is closely monitoring these developments. With strong manufacturing capabilities as a battery energy storage system China specialist, BLOO POWER continues to deliver reliable solutions tailored to global markets, including energy storage projects in Latin America.
Wladimir Janousek-an industry consultant and Secretary-General of the National Institute for Clean Energy-noted that the specific application scenarios subject to this higher tariff rate account for the majority of Brazil's current demand for imported batteries.
Janousek cautioned, however, that raising import tariffs may not necessarily bolster the competitiveness of the domestic industry. During the public consultation phase, Inel opposed the petition, arguing that such a move would merely repeat the policy missteps previously witnessed in the photovoltaic module sector. This latest adjustment follows a broader tariff hike implemented by Brazil in February 2026, which affected other battery classifications and capital goods, adjusting the general tariff rates for various energy storage components to a range of 16% to 20%.
