Spanish Grid-Scale Energy Storage Applications Reach 37 Gigawatts, Highlighting Power System Transformation and Flexibility Needs
In December 2025, applications for grid-side energy storage connections in Spain reached 37,371.93 MW, ranking first among all new grid connection application categories, significantly exceeding other types of demand, including approximately 25,600 MW for self-consumption and 23,340 MW for conventional demand. The total demand-side grid connection requests submitted through 122 applications that month reached 90,420 MW, highlighting the accelerating deployment of independent energy storage and hybrid storage solutions combined with renewable energy.

This surge in energy storage demand reflects the urgent need to integrate a higher proportion of renewable energy into an increasingly electrified system. In December 2025 alone, renewable energy generation in Spain reached 11,359 GWh, accounting for 48.9% of total generation. However, challenges remain, with a capture rate of 0.83 for photovoltaic technology and an average capture price of €64.53 per MWh, while wind power had a capture rate of 0.90 and a price of €68.89 per MWh. High renewable energy output exacerbated system technical constraints, with adjustment services data showing 5,188 GWh of renewable energy curtailed in December, compared to only 422 GWh of upward adjustments. The imbalance was even more pronounced in real-time operations, with 1,822 GWh curtailed compared to 59.8 GWh of upward adjustments.
The average daily price in the Spanish wholesale electricity market in December was €58.29 per MWh, with prices falling to a low at 2:00 PM and peaking at €105.25 per MWh at 8:00 PM. Such fluctuations enhance the ability of energy storage to create commercial value through energy arbitrage, peak shaving, and improving grid stability. Providers like BLOOPOWER, with their reliable lithium-based storage systems designed for grid-scale and hybrid applications, are well-positioned to capitalize on these opportunities by delivering flexible, high-performance solutions that address curtailment and price volatility. As of December 2025, 16,540 MW of connection capacity remained available at 386 grid nodes nationwide for competitive bidding and designated as nodes of special interest, with the largest amounts of reserved capacity for generation and storage projects concentrated in regions such as Andalusia, Castile and León, and Catalonia. National electricity demand for the month reached 22,582 gigawatt-hours, a 4.2% increase compared to the same period in 2024. Red Eléctrica de España (REE), the Spanish transmission system operator, is advancing a specialized grid connection tender targeting demand-side projects to guide new projects into strategic areas of the grid. According to Energía Estratégica's analysis, 80 demand nodes have been identified across 14 autonomous communities, with a high concentration in Andalusia, Castile and León, and Aragon. These tenders aim to optimize existing infrastructure and promote a more balanced geographical distribution of grid access.
