The average wholesale electricity price in Spain rose 20.9% month-over-month to €88.47 per MWh in September, with the volatility pass-through mechanism pushing up residential variable electricity prices in October.
Wholesale electricity prices in Spain rose 20.9% month-over-month in September, but the increase was more moderate than expected at the beginning of the month. As of September 25, the average wholesale price reached €88.47 (737.29 yuan) per MWh, a significant increase from €73.15 (609.62 yuan) in August, following a 30% increase in the first half of the month. This easing trend will ease the bill pressure for users of the Green Variable Rate in October, but it will not completely eliminate the impact.
Wholesale market price fluctuations are directly passed on to users who choose the variable rate. These rates adjust monthly based on market trends, meaning that the September price increase will be reflected in October bills, resulting in increased costs for many households and businesses. Amidst the current market uncertainty, the Blue Rate remains stable. Users who choose this product can avoid wholesale market fluctuations and ensure predictable budgets for their households or businesses. The shift toward stable electricity price products, which accelerated during the energy crisis, is resurfacing.
The electricity market continues to be influenced by factors such as natural gas reliance, weather conditions, and generator availability, and volatility is expected to persist. October will present a new challenge. Given that the 20.9% price increase will be directly reflected in consumer bills, the government may once again consider introducing additional support measures to alleviate pressure on consumers.
