Energy Management System (EMS) is a key component of energy storage system. It is responsible for monitoring, controlling and optimizing the energy flow and operating efficiency of the entire energy storage system.

"A good solution comes from top-level design, and a good system comes from EMS", which shows the importance of EMS in energy storage system.

The existence of energy management system is to summarize the information of each subsystem in the energy storage system, comprehensively control the operation of the whole system, and make relevant decisions to ensure the safe operation of the system.

EMS will upload data to the cloud and provide operation tools for the operator's back-end management personnel. At the same time, EMS is also responsible for direct interaction with users. The user's operation and maintenance personnel can view the operation of the energy storage system in real time through EMS to implement supervision.

Basic composition:

Central control unit: the brain of EMS, responsible for processing data, executing strategies and making decisions.

Data acquisition system: collects real-time data of various parts of the energy storage system, such as battery status, PCS status, grid parameters, etc.

Communication interface: exchanges data and issues instructions with other components in the energy storage system (such as BMS, PCS).

User interface: Provides a visual display of the system status, as well as an operation interface for users to set up and control the system.

Analysis and optimization algorithms: Built-in software algorithms for analyzing data, predicting trends, and optimizing charging and discharging strategies.

Safety and protection logic: Ensures safe operation of the system under various operating conditions, including fault detection and emergency response.

Working principle:

Data monitoring: EMS monitors the status and parameters of all relevant equipment in the energy storage system in real time.

Status evaluation: Based on the collected data, EMS evaluates the current working status of the system and the health status of the battery.

Strategy formulation: EMS formulates charging and discharging strategies based on grid demand, battery status, and preset optimization goals.

Instruction issuance: EMS sends control instructions to devices such as PCS and BMS to perform charging and discharging operations.

System optimization: EMS optimizes the overall performance and efficiency of the energy storage system through built-in algorithms.

Safety monitoring: Real-time monitoring of system safety to ensure timely response in abnormal situations.

Main functions of EMS:

Monitoring and control: EMS can monitor the operating status of the energy storage system in real time, including key parameters such as battery charge and discharge status, temperature, voltage, current, etc., and control the energy storage converter (PCS) to perform charge and discharge operations to keep the battery in the best working state.

Optimization and scheduling: EMS optimizes the charge and discharge strategy of the energy storage system according to factors such as grid demand, battery status and cost, improves energy utilization efficiency and reduces operating costs.

State estimation and performance evaluation: EMS estimates the battery status through advanced algorithms, including the remaining capacity and health of the battery, and evaluates the performance of the battery to provide a basis for optimizing the charge and discharge strategy.

Safety management: EMS includes a series of safety protection measures, such as over-temperature protection, over-charge protection, over-discharge protection, battery balancing management, etc., to prevent battery damage or safety accidents.

Data acquisition and analysis: EMS collects the operating data of the energy storage system, analyzes and processes it to identify system performance trends and provide data support for system optimization and maintenance.

Communication and interface: EMS communicates with other systems (such as power grid dispatching system, distributed energy management system, etc.), executes remote control instructions, and realizes the interaction between energy storage system and external systems.

Energy prediction and planning: EMS can predict power grid load and renewable energy generation based on historical data and weather forecasts, so as to plan the operation strategy of energy storage system.

Ancillary services: EMS can coordinate energy storage system to provide auxiliary services, such as frequency regulation, voltage control, etc., to support the stable operation of power grid.

Economic operation: EMS optimizes the operation mode of energy storage system by analyzing market prices and power grid demand to maximize economic benefits.

Fault diagnosis and maintenance: EMS can monitor abnormal conditions of batteries and systems, provide fault diagnosis reports, assist maintenance personnel to solve problems in time, and predict maintenance time.

Energy management system plays a vital role in energy storage system. It can not only improve energy utilization efficiency and reduce operating costs, but also ensure the safety and reliability of the system.
