Different batteries come in various sizes and shapes due to their diverse applications, but their basic internal unit structure remains the same. As shown in the figure, the positive electrode (PbO2) and cathode (Pb) in a lead-acid battery are immersed in an electrolyte (dilute sulfuric acid), generating a voltage of 2V between the two electrodes.

During charge and discharge, the positive and negative electrodes and the electrolyte in a lead-acid battery undergo the following changes:

1) Chemical Changes During Discharge:

When the battery is connected to an external circuit and discharged, the active materials on the positive plate (lead dioxide and lead) and the active materials on the negative plate (spongy pure lead) react in the electrolyte (dilute sulfuric acid solution) to form a new compound (lead sulfate). The sulfuric acid component is released from the electrolyte. The longer the discharge, the more diluted the sulfuric acid concentration.

2) Chemical Changes During Charging:

(Lead Sulfate) (Water) (Lead Sulfate)
The lead sulfate (PbSO₄) produced on the positive and negative plates during discharge is decomposed and reduced to sulfuric acid, lead peroxide, and lead during charging. The electrolyte concentration in the battery gradually increases and returns to its pre-discharge concentration. This change indicates that the active materials in the battery have been reduced to a state where they can once again provide power. Charging is complete when the lead sulfate at both the positive and negative electrodes has been reduced to its original active material. In the final stage of charging, the current is almost entirely used for the electrolysis of water. The negative plate produces hydrogen, while the positive plate produces oxygen. As a result, the electrolyte decreases, and pure water should be added at this time.
