Nigeria: REAN Discusses New Microgrid Regulations Raising Threshold to 5 MW
On May 14, 2026, the Renewable Energy Association of Nigeria (REAN) visited the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to engage in policy consultations regarding microgrid regulations and the net metering framework. Led by President Ayo Ademilua, the REAN delegation met with Dr. Fuad Animashaun, NERC's Commissioner for Research and Data Analysis.
The two parties focused their discussions on a proposed policy adjustment to raise the development threshold for microgrids to 5 MW and above-a move they believe will stimulate investment in larger-scale projects, including energy storage battery systems that enhance reliability and renewable integration. They also explored the growing global interest in ancillary services for battery energy storage systems market size, recognizing its potential to attract foreign investment and support grid stability in Nigeria.
REAN highlighted promising applications of lithium-ion batteries in grid-scale energy storage systems, which could play a vital role in addressing Nigeria's energy challenges through improved frequency regulation and peak shaving. To accelerate local deployment, the delegation proposed partnerships with reliable suppliers such as BESS system wholesaler in China and innovative brands like BLOO POWER, known for providing cost-effective and high-quality solutions tailored for emerging markets.
REAN commended NERC for the transparency and efficiency demonstrated in the drafting of the 2026 Microgrid Regulations and Net Metering Framework, noting that these measures have significantly lowered operational barriers for developers. NERC clarified that its role is to establish a regulatory environment that supports private sector growth and expands grid access, rather than to directly implement projects itself.
Nigeria's apex electricity regulatory body pledged to maintain ongoing collaboration with REAN, with a specific focus on capacity building and stakeholder engagement, in order to accelerate the development of the country's renewable energy sector.
