The company stated that 170 grid-scale battery energy storage projects went online in Europe last year, with a total installed capacity of 1.9 GW, making 2022 a record-breaking year. LCP Delta expects Europe to have 3.7 GW of grid-scale battery energy storage systems operational in 2023, an increase of nearly 100% year-on-year. These figures come from their new energy storage data platform, STOREtrack.

Although no country-level breakdown data was provided in a press release published by industry media, LCP Delta provided some data and infographics.

According to the data released by the company, the UK (excluding Northern Ireland) deployed 833 MW of battery energy storage systems in 2022. According to a research report published by Solar Media, the UK (including Northern Ireland) deployed 750 MW/800 MWh of battery energy storage systems. In either case, this figure amounts to approximately 40% of the battery energy storage systems deployed in Europe.

LCP Delta ranked Ireland as the second-largest energy storage market, deploying 328 MW of battery energy storage systems (17%) in 2022, followed by Germany with 226 MW (12.3%) and France with 224 MW (11.6%). Therefore, the combined total of these four countries accounted for 84.4% of the 1.9 GW battery energy storage systems deployed in Europe in 2022.

It is anticipated that Italy will make a significant leap from 1.3% in 2022 to 22.7% in 2023.

Harmony Energy launched a 196 MWh battery energy storage system in North Yorkshire, England, last year, which is said to be the largest energy storage project in Europe (in terms of storage capacity). Two 100 MWh battery energy storage projects deployed in Belgium began operations earlier this year.

The European Union recently introduced several eye-catching policies and measures to help promote the growth of the European energy storage market.

As part of the EU's Green Deal Industrial Strategy, the European Commission recently proposed a new Net-Zero Industry Act to help EU member states rapidly expand their clean energy transition and include energy storage systems as one of the covered technologies. The power market design reforms recently proposed by the European Commission have also been welcomed by energy storage industry organizations.
