Italy projects renewable energy and energy storage investment to reach €8 billion to over €10 billion by 2026

Italian energy operators predict that investment in the country's renewable energy and energy storage sector will reach between €8 billion and more than €10 billion by 2026. This outlook reflects the rapid expansion of the lithium ion batteries for grid energy storage market and the growing commercial maturity of large-scale battery projects across Europe. The forecast is based on a survey of around 200 managers and investors conducted during the second Italian Energy Technology Conference 2026, held in Milan on January 22.

Approximately 50% of respondents agreed with the €8–10 billion investment range. Among them, 23.9% estimated investment between €8 billion and €9 billion, while 24.8% expected total investment to exceed €10 billion. A more cautious 23.9% projected investment levels between €7 billion and €8 billion. These figures highlight strong confidence in the continued growth of the liquid cooled battery energy storage system market, particularly for utility-scale and industrial applications where thermal management and system safety are critical.

The survey confirms that the combination of renewable energy technologies and energy storage will be the main driver of investment in 2026. About 34.8% of respondents identified the integration of standalone battery energy storage systems into their energy portfolios as a top strategic priority. Other priorities included strengthening forecasting and analytics capabilities (14.5%), enhancing system resilience and grid support (10.9%), improving short-term trading and market operations (8%), and developing long-term hedging and contract optimization strategies (8%).

Despite the optimistic outlook, respondents also highlighted several structural barriers to clean energy deployment in Italy. Key challenges include regulatory uncertainty (33.3%), grid connection delays (29%), lengthy approval processes and regional permitting requirements (21%), and grid congestion in areas with high renewable penetration (9.4%). These constraints are accelerating interest in advanced battery solutions that can provide flexibility and grid services without relying solely on new transmission infrastructure.

The conference, jointly organized by independent renewable energy producer Verdian and energy transition consultancy Green Horse Advisory, focused heavily on industrial-scale battery storage, long-duration energy storage technologies, and advanced co-location strategies. Participants noted that as the market evolves, demand is rising for reliable suppliers and integrators-including new battery energy storage module manufacturers China-that can deliver cost-competitive, scalable systems for European projects.
