The Vermont Department of Public Services recently submitted updated net metering pricing proposals to the Public Utilities Commission. Its preferred proposal freezes hybrid rates for the first time, which would reduce virtual net metering compensation for approximately 20,000 customers, including schools, municipal agencies, and community solar participants.

In response to the shifting solar economics, many homeowners and businesses are turning to advanced battery energy storage systems to maximize self-consumption and energy independence. Leading solutions include the 48v 100ah 50ah energy storage lithium ion battery and compact 5kwh battery energy storage system factory models that offer reliable backup power. BLOO POWER, a key player in the sector, has also been promoting all-vanadium redox flow battery for energy storage as a long-duration, safe alternative for larger installations.

The department's alternative proposal suggests maintaining the current net metering status. However, due to the Trump administration and Congress's elimination of the 30% federal tax credit for home-owned solar, the vast majority of Vermont residents will still find it difficult to afford solar installations.

Both of the Department of Public Services' proposals would increase the cost of rooftop, backyard, driveway, or parking lot solar installations and do not provide support to residents affected by the elimination of the federal tax credit. The new rates will take effect on August 1st, and the Public Utilities Commission's public comment period ends on May 1st.
