Vietnam Energy Storage Batteries

Vietnam has released 15 national standards for energy storage batteries, establishing a localized safety technology system.

Vietnam has promulgated 15 national standards for energy storage batteries, laying the technological foundation for this emerging field and demonstrating the country's determination to build a modern, safe, and internationally aligned energy storage industry.

Energy storage is becoming a key link in Vietnam's energy transition. With the rapid development of renewable energy, the biggest challenge is no longer power generation, but rather how to efficiently store, coordinate, and utilize electricity. Given the increasing reliance of the national power system on fluctuating power sources such as wind and solar power, the development of energy storage technology has become an urgent need.

The new standard system covers the entire lifecycle of energy storage batteries, including design, testing, operation, and environmental impact and safety assessments during use. These standards reference international frameworks while being adapted to Vietnam's climate, infrastructure, and industrial capabilities. The 15 TCVN standards were developed based on international standard references, underwent a public consultation process, and were approved in accordance with the Law of Vietnam on Standards and Technical Specifications and Decree No. 11/2021/TT-BKHCN of the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Experts point out that Vietnam needs to continue developing independent testing standards for components such as batteries, converter systems, auxiliary systems, fire protection systems, air conditioning, data acquisition and monitoring systems, and protection systems. Simultaneously, it needs to develop operation and maintenance guidelines and grid coordination specifications for energy storage systems to optimize performance and extend project lifespan.

The completion of this standards system is considered a milestone, marking Vietnam's formal entry into the energy storage standardization phase. This lays the foundation for the development of the domestic energy storage industry and creates opportunities for international integration of the new energy supply chain. The standards will continue to be promoted, implemented, and updated regularly to ensure they meet the needs of rapid technological development and energy transition practices.
