Germany's Energy Storage Sector Sets Record with 2 GWh of New Capacity Added in Q1

According to statistics from the German Solar Industry Association (BSW-Solar)-based on data from the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA)-approximately 2.5 million battery energy storage system BESS had been connected to Germany's grid as of the first quarter of 2026, bringing the total installed storage capacity to 28 gigawatt-hours (GWh). In the first three months of this year alone, Germany added 2 GWh of new battery storage capacity-a year-on-year increase of approximately 67%-marking an all-time high.

BSW-Solar noted that large-scale storage projects have emerged as the primary driver of this growth. In the first quarter, the new capacity added by large-scale storage systems-defined as individual units exceeding 1 megawatt-hour (MWh)-surpassed 1 GWh. This represents a year-on-year surge of approximately 270%, effectively quadrupling the sector's capacity. Commercial battery energy storage systems saw an addition of approximately 160 MWh, up 42% year-on-year, while residential storage systems added approximately 740 MWh, remaining on par with the same period last year. Many of these deployments also incorporate reliable 48 volt lithium battery modules for smaller-scale commercial and industrial applications.

Carsten Körnig, Managing Director of BSW-Solar, stated that battery storage can significantly reduce reliance on expensive backup gas-fired power plants. He called for measures to ensure that storage solutions are not disadvantaged by unsuitable tender criteria in upcoming electricity auctions, urging instead for targeted policies to bolster the development of energy storage. Battery energy storage system safety remains a top priority across all installations to maintain public confidence and regulatory support. Currently, the storage capacity developed in Germany represents only a fraction of what is required. Consequently, further efforts are needed to dismantle market barriers-including simplifying the conditions for combined solar-plus-storage and wind-plus-storage projects, accelerating grid connection procedures, optimizing grid fee regulations, and allowing PV power plants to utilize local storage for energy absorption during periods of grid congestion or negative electricity prices, rather than being subjected to mandatory curtailment.
