Renewable energy developer Soltech Energy Solutions is deploying a 12MW/12MWh battery storage system for utility Nybro Energi in Sweden, which is expected to be online by the end of this year.

A spokesperson for Soltech Energy Solutions said the project will be operational in the fourth quarter of 2023 after deployment. picture

He added that the battery storage system will mainly provide frequency regulation services for Swedish transmission system operator (TSO) Svenska Kraftnät, but may also provide power to the grid during peak electricity demand periods in the future.

Nybro Energi will be the owner of the energy storage project. Håkan Dahlgren, the company's CEO, commented: "We are one of the first energy companies in Sweden to invest in this type of large-scale battery storage system. We see a wider market for these solutions and as we adopt more and more When generating more renewable electricity, there will be a need to store energy and stabilize grid operations.”

The Swedish energy storage market has been seeing frequent new project announcements of late, as battery storage projects increasingly offer the flexibility previously offered by Swedish hydroelectric facilities.

A recently announced battery storage project is a 20MW/20MWh battery storage project acquired by Switzerland's largest energy developer Axpo, which will come online next year. Developer Ingrid Capacity predicted in an interview at the 2023 Energy Storage Summit in London in February this year that Sweden will have around 100-200MW of battery storage systems online this year.

Rickard Lantz, Business Development Manager at Soltech Energy Solutions, said: “We are delighted to be helping Nybro Energi with the technical solution to stabilize the regional grid. The battery energy storage system will help frequency service, optimize costs and will be able to provide energy during periods of peak electricity demand. Meeting the needs of users. It’s a scalable investment that will pay off enormously.”
