India has initiated tenders for energy storage capacity of 171GWh, with over 55GWh alone in the first half of 2025.
According to data from the Indian Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) trade association, since the first tender was held in 2018, 118 tenders related to energy storage have been held, including hybrid projects of renewable energy plus energy storage and independent energy storage.
According to IESA's data as of June 2025, the total energy storage system (ESS) capacity has reached 171GWh, including 106GWh of pumped hydro energy storage (PHES) and 66GWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS).
Conducting the tender process is only an important first step towards widespread adoption of energy storage. Energy storage is crucial for supporting India's national goals, including the deployment and grid connection of 500GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.
This target encompasses 472GW of renewable energy, including solar panels and wind power. According to The Economic Times, Indian Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar stated at the IESA India Energy Storage Week conference this week that India has achieved around 50% of its renewable energy capacity.
