Analysis shows that the cost of a 10kW PV + 10kWh energy storage system in Germany has dropped from €25,000 in 2022 to €17,500 by the summer of 2025. For a family of four consuming 5,000 kWh of electricity annually at a price of 0.35 €/kWh, this configuration can achieve 80% self-sufficiency in electricity, saving €1,400 in electricity bills and earning an additional €500 from selling excess electricity, resulting in a total annual benefit of €2,000 and a payback period of around 10 years.
If dynamic electricity prices are adopted and the controllability requirements of Section 14a of the Energy Economy Act (EnWG) are met, an additional savings of €400 can be achieved; when combined with an electric vehicle or heat pump, annual savings can reach up to €2,800, and the payback period is shortened to five years.
There are currently 3.7 million households in Germany with solar systems, and 16.3 million single-family homes still have potential for installation growth.
