Brazil's Energy Storage Capacity Reserve Auction Prioritizes Weak Grid Areas, 10%-30% of Nodes Receive Site Selection Bonuses
Brazil's Energy Research Office has introduced a site selection method for battery energy storage systems in capacity reserve auctions. This method aims to guide winning projects to locate weak nodes in the national interconnected system, thereby improving grid robustness, supporting voltage stability, and providing reliable capacity. The technical specification document is currently open for public comment until December 1st, proposing location criteria prioritizing nodes with lower electrical strength.
This method uses electrical robustness as a basis for site selection, statistically ranking the nodes with the lowest robustness (10%, 20%, or 30%) as first-tier priority areas. Dynamic stability tests are then used to screen for high-value energy storage sites with deeper voltage drops and slower recovery. Preliminary tests show a high degree of overlap between the identified nodes and areas known for voltage control difficulties, including areas where system operators are considering deploying synchronous condensers.
The final auction scheme will include a complete list of priority locations, with projects connecting to designated nodes receiving bonuses. Brazil's Energy Research Office emphasizes that this method can guide grid-based energy storage systems to stabilize voltage, improve dynamic performance, and reduce additional hardware requirements. It is expected that energy storage projects implemented through this method will enhance grid flexibility and prepare for the integration of high proportions of renewable energy.
