Germany Simplifies Installation Process for 600 MW Balcony Solar PV Systems; Several European Countries Promote Permit-Free Balcony Solar PV
Small-scale balcony solar PV systems are rapidly developing in several European countries, providing power generation possibilities for households without access to terraces or rooftops. These systems typically have a power output of 300 to 800 watts and can be directly plugged into an outlet, instantly reducing grid electricity consumption. Their portability makes them ideal for homeowners and tenants who cannot afford permanent installations.
Germany is currently the leading country in the application of this technology, with over 500,000 balcony solar PV devices installed. The country has comprehensively simplified the installation process, allowing users to install small solar PV systems without permits, requiring only a quick application to the grid operator. The power limit has been increased to 600 to 800 watts, and tenant installation rights have been strengthened. Italy has also implemented flexible policies, treating balcony solar PV as a permit-free building intervention in most cases.
Plug-in systems are seeing continued growth in France, Austria, and Lithuania, and Belgium has announced a new regulatory framework, effective in 2025, to facilitate the rapid installation of small-scale solar PV systems on residential balconies.
