Ecuador opens 643 MW of self-use/distributed renewable energy projects, with 179 MW subject to mandatory grid connection and an 18-month development deadline.
The Ecuadorian government, through the Ministry of Environment and Energy (Ministerio de Ambiente y Energía), officially opened the door for the private sector to add 643 MW of capacity to the national electricity system, strictly based on self-generation and distributed renewable energy projects. Minister Inés María Manzano issued certificates of commissioning to the responsible companies, granting them exclusive rights to conduct feasibility studies, build, and operate the projects.
The projects, encompassing both photovoltaic and hydropower technology paths, must complete all procedures and obtain official authorization within 18 months. Specifically, 179.1 MW of distributed generation projects will participate entirely in the electricity market through regulated contracts; meanwhile, 464.6 MW of self-generation projects will meet companies' self-power needs and allow them to sell excess electricity for improved profitability.
Unofficial estimates indicate that the installed capacity of distributed photovoltaic systems nationwide has reached approximately 100 MW, with continued growth among residential, commercial, and industrial users. The current regulatory framework streamlines grid connection and the injection of surplus electricity, effectively incentivizing private investment in the solar sector. In 2024, Ecuador faced a severe energy crisis, leading officials to implement nighttime power rationing to reduce consumption. Against this backdrop, the National Congress approved the "Law to Promote Private Investment in Organic Energy Generation" in October 2024. This law, driven by the government and designated as an economic emergency, aims to stimulate the implementation of renewable energy solutions and promote private investment in the energy sector.
