The German market is experiencing a fundamental shift from a focus primarily on residential energy storage to one centered around large-scale storage. At the same time, the profit model for energy storage projects, which participate in the electricity spot market, frequency regulation, and backup services, is forming a relatively stable, multi-faceted revenue structure, laying the foundation for subsequent investment.
The German energy storage market is undergoing rapid expansion, with new installed capacity projected to reach 8.2 GWh in 2025, a 23% increase from 2024. According to the medium scenario, annual new capacity additions are projected to rise to 22.2 GWh by 2029, with large-scale batteries dominating the market, adding 11.7 GWh annually and projecting a cumulative installed capacity of 37.1 GWh. The accelerated commissioning of large-scale projects will gradually unleash growth starting in 2025, ushering in a period of rapid growth for battery energy storage in Germany.
Among the three major application scenarios, residential storage is expected to decline to 4.5 GWh in 2025, but will still account for more than half of total new capacity. At the policy level, the Solar Peak Act will be a key driver in promoting the integration of solar energy storage with residential PV systems. It supports mechanisms such as negative electricity price arbitrage, smart metering, simplified grid registration, and direct participation of storage devices in dispatch. This is expected to boost annual installed capacity in the residential market to 7 GWh by 2029.
In contrast, commercial and industrial energy storage in Germany has grown more slowly. With increasing corporate demand for flexible electricity use and price hedging capabilities, this market segment is expected to add 800 MWh by 2025 and reach 3.4 GWh by 2029. New financing products and more market-proven and approved application scenarios will be key drivers of this growth.
