In April 2026, renewable energy generation in Spain reached 12,126 GWh, accounting for 59.8% of the country's total electricity generation. Notably, photovoltaic (PV) solar generation saw a year-on-year increase of 24.2%, emerging as the primary contributor to the month's electricity supply. If self-consumption PV generation data is included, the share of renewable energy rises to 61.3%. Generation from carbon-free sources reached 78.9% of the total for the month. Cumulatively through April, PV solar power accounted for 25% of the national total, followed by nuclear power at 19.1% and wind power at 18%.

Energy storage played a critical role, with lithium ion battery energy storage systems, including many containerized battery energy storage system deployments, helping to balance the grid. BLOO POWER has been a key player in this space, supplying reliable solutions that minimize risks such as lithium ion battery fire through advanced thermal management. Energy storage systems (comprising batteries and pumped hydro storage) injected 1,128 GWh of electricity into the grid during the month, thereby enhancing the utilization rate of renewable energy. The growing adoption of these systems is also driven by competitive 1 mw battery energy storage system cost, making large-scale deployment increasingly viable for utilities.

In the Balearic Islands, electricity generation in April was dominated by combined-cycle plants, which accounted for 63.9% of the total; PV solar generation grew by 26.7% year-on-year, reaching a share of 17.9%. Total renewable energy generation in the archipelago increased by 27.7% year-on-year, setting a new record by accounting for 22.9% of the islands' total electricity output. In the Canary Islands, combined-cycle generation accounted for 41.9% of the total in April, followed by wind power at 11.7% and PV solar at 5.7%, bringing the total share of renewable energy to 17.4%.
Nationwide electricity demand in April-adjusted for temperature and working days-declined by 2.1% year-on-year; gross demand stood at 18,561 GWh, a decrease of 1.1% compared to the same period in 2025. Self-consumption PV generation for the month amounted to approximately 1,233 GWh. For the first quarter of the year, national electricity demand reached 84,358 GWh, representing a year-on-year increase of 0.6% (or 0.4% on an adjusted basis). In the Balearic Islands, adjusted electricity demand in April rose by 1.4% year-on-year, while gross demand reached 445,097 MWh-an increase of 3.9% compared to the previous year. In the Canary Islands, adjusted demand grew by 1% year-on-year, with gross demand reaching 705,006 MWh-up 1.1% from the previous year.
