Japan has launched energy storage subsidies, offering up to 75% cost support for projects with a minimum capacity of 5kW.

Japan's Ministry of the Environment has launched public applications for two subsidy programs aimed at accelerating the early deployment of perovskite solar cells and promoting battery integration to achieve energy parity. The application period begins on September 4, 2025, and closes in early October. According to a Yomiuri Shimbun report this week, the subsidies cover up to 75% of the purchase and installation costs of perovskite solar modules, with higher support for emergency evacuation centers.

The fiscal 2025 private renewable energy project emission reduction subsidy aims to achieve energy storage parity by pairing battery energy storage systems with the first PV project. Applicants must install energy storage systems simultaneously with their perovskite solar facilities, and private companies and organizations must submit applications by noon JST on October 7, 2025. Japan has set a target of 20 GW of perovskite solar capacity by 2040, and the industry is accelerating technological advancements through flexible tandem cells and new manufacturing processes. Experiments conducted by the industry have tested lightweight photovoltaic modules on rooftops where traditional panels are not suitable, and the government continues to support the development of solid-state batteries. Recent studies have also shown that integrated photovoltaic storage and heat pump systems are showing an increasing economic trend in many regions.
