UK-based utility company Octopus Energy has announced its plans to optimize the battery storage projects deployed in the UK for UAE-based company Masdar. Masdar has committed to investing £1 billion ($1.25 billion) in the country's energy storage market. Octopus Energy will provide its management platform, Kraken, to optimize these battery storage projects for Masdar.
The agreement was signed by Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, and Greg Jackson, founder and CEO of Octopus Energy, at the UAE Climate Tech Forum. Following Masdar's acquisition of renewable energy developer Arlington Energy in October 2022, the company pledged the £1 billion investment in the UK's battery storage sector.
Octopus Energy's Kraken software platform will assist Masdar in controlling the performance of the battery storage systems and enable them to store and release energy in the "most environmentally friendly way."
Ramahi stated, "Masdar and Octopus Energy are committed to pioneering innovative clean energy solutions, disrupting and transforming the energy market. As we expand our presence in the UK energy sector, with our £1 billion investment in battery storage, the Kraken platform will provide us with the flexibility needed to rapidly scale our operations. The experience and expertise of the Kraken platform in battery storage asset management will help us maximize our investment value and support the ambitious energy transition goals in the UK."
