According to foreign media reports, renewable energy developer Key Capture Energy has recently launched and started operating a 20MW/45.6MWh battery energy storage system, marking the largest battery storage project operated by the company in New York State.

The company announced on June 6th that the KCE NY 6 battery energy storage project, located south of downtown Buffalo, is now officially online. The 2.3-hour duration battery storage project utilizes energy storage systems manufactured by inverter and energy storage system manufacturer Sungrow, with Black and Macdonald serving as the construction and engineering contractor for the project.

Taylor Quarles, Vice President of Key Capture Energy, stated, "We are excited to share the news of the official launch of the KCE NY 6 battery energy storage project, which is a significant step towards achieving New York's goal of utilizing 70% renewable energy by 2030."

Back in November 2020, the project received a $5 million funding from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) under its Market Acceleration Bridge Incentive Program, and construction commenced one year later.

This is the third battery energy storage project operated by the company in New York State, following the 20MW KCE NY 1 and 3MW KCE NY 3 projects. The KCE NY 6 battery energy storage project will be integrated into the grid operated by National Grid's US subsidiary.

Doreen M. Harris, President and CEO of NYSERDA, stated, "The KCE NY 6 battery energy storage system is part of a growing portfolio of large-scale storage projects that will help make renewable energy facilities like wind and solar available when and where they are most needed, reducing reliance on peak power plants and ultimately lowering costs for New York's electric system."

However, the Market Acceleration Bridge Incentive Program by NYSERDA has not been fully utilized, with only a few developers receiving incentives. New York State has introduced a new incentive program to procure the large-scale storage systems required to achieve its goal of deploying 6GW of energy storage systems by 2030.
