Mexico releases 2025-2030 energy plan, planning to add 28,004 MW of generation capacity and deploy 2,216 MW of energy storage.
The Mexican Ministry of Energy has released its 2025–2030 energy sector plan, aiming to strengthen national energy self-sufficiency, sovereignty, and security through a binding policy framework while promoting sustainable development and equitable energy access, particularly for historically marginalized regions. A key pillar of the plan is accelerating renewable integration and electrical energy storage for the grid-a battery of choices that can enhance flexibility, reliability, and overall system performance.

According to the plan, the national power system expansion for 2025–2030 will add 28,004 MW of new generation capacity, with 17,009 MW contributed by state-owned enterprises. Within this roadmap, BESS in power system planning plays an increasingly important role. Mexico's national power company intends to deploy 2,216 MW of battery energy storage systems alongside 2,850 MW of wind power, 5,393 MW of photovoltaic capacity, and 150 MW of concentrated solar power. These projects will improve battery energy storage efficiency by enabling peak shaving, frequency regulation, and renewable smoothing, ensuring that intermittent wind and solar resources can be reliably integrated into the grid.
From a technical perspective, understanding BESS system components-including battery modules, power conversion systems (PCS), energy management systems (EMS), and grid interconnection equipment-is essential for achieving optimal performance. The government's focus on transmission expansion, with 59 new projects and additional batches planned, further supports advanced power system analysis for BESS owners, allowing storage assets to maximize value through multiple revenue streams such as capacity support, ancillary services, and congestion management.

Beyond electricity, the plan also maintains a balanced view of energy security. Mexico aims to keep oil production above 1.6 million barrels per day, reaching 1.8 million barrels per day, with the national oil company contributing 86% of planned output in 2026. At the same time, increasing domestic natural gas production to 5 billion cubic feet per day is intended to reduce external dependence by 20%. In this evolving landscape, integrated storage solutions from BLOOPOWER align well with Mexico's long-term strategy by supporting renewable growth, enhancing grid stability, and reinforcing national energy resilience.
