The European Commission has approved a €150 million subsidy scheme proposed by the Romanian government to support the installation of at least 2,174 MWh of standalone energy storage facilities. The Commission determined that the scheme complies with the provisions of its State Aid Framework for the Clean Industry Pact, adopted on June 25, 2025.

The scheme will allocate aid through a competitive bidding process, distributed in the form of direct grants to be fully committed by December 31, 2030, with funding sourced from the EU Modernisation Fund. Its objective is to increase electricity storage capacity in order to facilitate the smooth integration of variable renewable energy sources into the national power grid.

Teresa Ribera, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission for a Clean, Just and Competitive Transition, stated that this marks Romania's first scheme under the State Aid Framework for the Clean Industry Pact, and that the measure will contribute to achieving a cleaner, more secure, and more resilient electricity supply. The Romanian Ministry of Energy has previously indicated that potential beneficiaries include micro-enterprises, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), large corporations, and autonomous institutions.
