The Dominican Republic has launched a new tender to add energy storage systems to existing renewable energy projects

The Dominican Republic will launch a new tender to integrate battery system for energy storage into existing renewable energy projects. Ricardo Guerrero, Deputy Minister of Electricity and Energy, announced the initiative at the Future Energy Summit Caribbean, which brought together more than 400 industry participants. He stated that the tender process will continue and preparations are underway for a new round of tenders for existing projects, which will include energy storage.
The recently completed competitive tender for the EDES-LP-NGR-01-2025 project, which combines 600 MW of renewable energy with commercial battery energy storage, attracted bids for over 1500 MW of peak capacity and nearly 1300 MWh. The official award announcement is expected soon. Guerrero noted that the upcoming tender aligns with the country's upcoming updated energy planning framework. In recent years, the Dominican Republic's total installed capacity has grown from approximately 5 GW to over 7.5 GW, an increase of more than 50%. In 2025 alone, 1,200 MW of new capacity was added, 58% of which came from renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power. Renewable energy currently accounts for approximately 25% of the electricity supply.
Energy storage is becoming a key component of grid stability and the integration of renewable energy into the grid. Guerrero previously stated that at least 138 MW of new energy storage is expected to be added in 2026, and with ongoing projects, this will add no less than 500 MW in the short term. In addition to awarded projects, the national transmission company ETED is evaluating 600 MW of energy storage capacity, another 200 MW is in the analysis phase, and additional private projects are underway. Several international suppliers are expected to participate, including solutions from a China home battery energy storage system factory and providers offering car battery energy storage capacity for second-life applications.
BLOO POWER has also expressed strong interest in the Caribbean market and is positioned to supply advanced systems for these projects. Guerrero has set a clear target of achieving at least 1,200 MW of new energy storage capacity by 2028. Foreign direct investment in the power sector reached approximately $1.2 billion in the past year.
