The Philippine Department of Energy (DEA) has launched its seventh round of green energy auctions, requiring ground-mounted solar PV projects to include energy storage systems

 

 

 

 

The DEA has confirmed it will launch its seventh round of green energy auctions this year. The department plans to release tender terms in the second quarter, providing guidance for potential developers.

 

The seventh round of auctions will cover rooftop, ground-mounted, and floating solar PV technologies. Floating solar PV allocation capacity is expected to include unsubscribed portions from the fourth round of auctions, which concluded last November. This round of auctions will allocate capacity nationwide, but the southern island of Mindanao will receive a strategically significant incremental allocation, with an expected capacity approximately five times that of previous rounds. The DEA stated that this move aims to stimulate investment in the region, meet growing energy demand, and promote a more balanced and resilient national power system.

 

The department also clarified that all ground-mounted solar PV projects in this round of auctions must be equipped with battery energy storage systems to further enhance grid stability and reliability. Developers are actively exploring the best energy storage lithium battery solutions available, while many are partnering with the biggest solar energy battery storage companies to ensure long-term performance. Some innovative approaches even consider repurposed car battery for home energy storage applications as a cost-effective option for smaller hybrid setups. The target commissioning date for rooftop and ground-mounted solar PV projects supported by this round of auctions is 2027, while the target commissioning date for floating solar PV projects is 2027 to 2029. The Philippines previously announced its seventh and three subsequent green auctions in February, aiming to allocate an additional 25 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity through these auctions by 2035.
