Evolution of Demand-Side in Australia's National Electricity Market: South Australia to Receive Negative Electricity Prices for Nearly Half the Time in Q4 2025

Renewable Energy Storage Systems in the Australias

In the fourth quarter of 2025, approximately half the time (46%) of the grid-connected load in South Australia affected by spot prices was actually paid for when using electricity, with the vast majority (80%) supplied by renewable energy. This demonstrates that the electricity system is shifting from managing demand to meeting demand. South Australia's rooftop solar PV capacity is nearing parity with peak load, an unprecedented scenario globally. Other Australian states are on a similar trajectory, propelling Australia's national electricity market into a new international arena.

Australia's rooftop solar PV has more than tripled in the past seven years, from approximately 7 gigawatts in 2018 to a combined 25 gigawatts across all national electricity market states by 2025, becoming the largest single source of electricity by installed capacity. In New South Wales and Queensland, rooftop solar PV capacity now accounts for approximately 60% to 70% of peak load, while in South Australia it approaches 90%. Rooftop solar PV is reshaping the demand curve, leading to lower daytime demand, a steeper rebound during the evening peak, and increased intraday volatility. To offset this ramp-up challenge and increase flexibility, the Australian government launched the popular Home Battery Grant Scheme in 2025, which is accelerating the adoption of battery storage for solar energy across households.

Battery energy storage systems in electric power systems are now recognized as critical for managing the growing volatility caused by high rooftop solar penetration. Both utility-scale and behind-the-meter solutions are playing an increasingly important role. Many projects are sourcing high-performance energy storage battery from China, while leading battery manufacturers energy storage continue to expand their presence in the Australian market to meet surging demand.

BLOO POWER has emerged as a strong contender in the region, offering competitive and reliable systems tailored for both residential and commercial applications. The current system is developing the capacity to accommodate new large-scale loads, particularly those that can align with or operate flexibly with periods of excess renewable energy generation. South Australia recently opened 11,000 square kilometers in western Waiara and eastern Goler Range for new renewable energy project proposals, aiming to achieve its goal of 100% net renewable electricity by 2027. The state's transmission planning agency, Electranet, is planning to double peak load over the next 15 years and has already observed significant increases in electricity consumption from sectors such as data centers, magnetite mining, and copper mining.
