The European Entso-E (Entso-E) alliance has released its second-phase technical report on grid configuration, mandating compliance for asynchronous generation and energy storage modules exceeding 1 MW in Europe.

 

The European Power Transmission System Operators Alliance (ETSI) has released its second-phase technical report on grid configuration requirements, which will mandate compliance for asynchronous energy generation and energy storage modules exceeding 1 MW in Europe.

 

The draft amendment to the network specification regarding generator requirements introduces non-extensive grid configuration technical requirements, aiming to ensure the stability and resilience of the future European power system, which is primarily based on renewable energy and energy storage technologies. Based on this draft, the alliance released a provisional technical report on detailed grid configuration requirements in May 2024 and established a grid capability technical group in June 2024, bringing together key European stakeholders across the power industry.

 

The May 2024 technical report clarifies that grid capability will become a mandatory technical requirement for connection points of generation park modules and energy storage modules exceeding 1 MW connected to the European grid. This requirement will be incorporated into the next update to the network specification, aiming to provide stability, frequency control, and inertia support for inverter-based systems-including wind farms, solar power plants, energy storage systems, and electric vehicles with vehicle-to-grid (V2G) connectivity-functions previously handled by synchronous power plants.

 

Once the network specification officially comes into effect, the alliance plans to draft application guidance to support national implementation. The timeline for this guidance will depend on the European Commission's progress in publishing the network specification.
