Malaysian utility company Tenaga Nasional Berhad has officially launched a floating solar pilot project, which may help unlock 2.2GW of power generation capacity.

The floating solar pilot project has an installed capacity of 100KW covering an area of 1,085㎡ and equipped with 220 solar PV modules. It aims to demonstrate how to utilize Malaysia's largest lake, which spans 36,900 hectares, to build larger-scale floating solar projects.

Tenaga Nasional Berhad estimates that floating solar energy system can be deployed on 10% of the lake surface, generating around 2,200MW of renewable energy without harming the lake's ecology.

This plan combines solar and hydropower to optimize resource utilization and contribute to Malaysia's renewable energy goals. The HHFS system requires the installation of solar panels on a floating platform above the reservoir. This system generates electricity during the day, while the hydroelectric power station provides continuous energy during periods of less sunlight.
