South Australia led the surge in energy storage revenues in Australia's national electricity market in the first week of 2026, reaching AU$14,271 per megawatt. The state continues to rely on advanced battery and energy storage technology to maintain grid stability and facilitate renewable energy integration, and its high revenue ceiling reflects high premiums during critical grid support periods. The state achieved an average daily wholesale price spread of AU$1,836 per megawatt-hour for 1-hour systems, AU$1,066 per megawatt-hour for 2-hour systems, and AU$640 per megawatt-hour for 3-hour systems, demonstrating the highest arbitrage opportunities across all storage durations. This performance underscores the critical role that batteries used for electrical energy storage are playing in modern energy markets.

According to Aurora Energy Research, Queensland maintained stable positive returns, with revenues ranging from AU$728 to AU$1,291 per megawatt-hour. The wholesale electricity price spreads reflected this stability, with AU$118 per MWh for a 1-hour system, AU$110 per MWh for a 2-hour system, and AU$100 per MWh for a 3-hour system. Victoria performed moderately, with incomes ranging from AU$480 to AU$3381 per MWh, and its wholesale electricity price spreads showed AU$313 per MWh for a 1-hour system, AU$240 per MWh for a 2-hour system, and AU$184 per MWh for a 3-hour system. New South Wales showed the most volatile results, with incomes ranging from -AU$48 to AU$1034 per MWh, and its wholesale electricity price spreads were AU$158 per MWh for a 1-hour system, AU$136 per MWh for a 2-hour system, and AU$112 per MWh for a 3-hour system. Leading top battery energy storage companies, including innovators like BLOOPOWER, are closely monitoring these regional dynamics to optimize system deployment and operation.

An extreme heatwave in early January hit several eastern Australian states, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in large areas of New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia. Javier Savolainen, Energy Market Development Manager at Wärtsilä, pointed out that many grid-scale battery storage systems on the East Coast have a discharge time of only 2 to 3 hours, which may be insufficient during prolonged extreme weather events. This highlights a growing need for storage solutions that complement not only solar but also wind energy battery storage, as renewable penetration increases. Despite some performance degradation during heat waves, operators still managed to capitalize on revenue opportunities in each state. Data shows that short-duration storage systems in all states achieved higher average daily wholesale electricity price spreads than long-duration systems, reflecting the premium value of their rapid response capabilities during peak demand and grid instability events.
