Analysis by the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany indicates that by 2025, net photovoltaic power generation will surpass lignite power generation for the first time, reaching an installed capacity of 116.8 gigawatts.

According to data from the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems' Energy Chart, in 2025 photovoltaic power generation exceeded lignite power generation for the first time, becoming Germany's second-largest source of net electricity generation. By the end of the year, photovoltaic installed capacity increased to 116.8 GW, with 16.2 GW of new DC capacity added. Total electricity generation reached about 87 billion kWh, of which 71 billion kWh were fed into the public grid and 16.9 billion kWh were used for self-consumption. Compared with 2024, total generation rose by around 15 billion kWh, a 21% increase. As distributed PV continues to expand, lithium-ion battery safety has become a key consideration for households and utilities aiming to store excess solar power efficiently and securely.

Meanwhile, although wind power remained the largest source of electricity generation, onshore wind output fell 3.2% year-on-year to 132 billion kWh, while offshore wind produced about 26.1 billion kWh. Installed wind capacity stood at 68.1 GW, below the expected target of 76.5 GW. These fluctuations further highlight the importance of storage systems and a deeper understanding of inside lithium battery structures, thermal management, and protection mechanisms to ensure long-term reliability in large-scale deployment.

In 2025, the duration of negative electricity prices on the power exchange hit a record 574.75 hours, far exceeding the 459 hours in 2024. Negative prices often lasted six hours or more, with an average of –10.97 €/MWh. Against this backdrop, the German energy storage market is expanding rapidly. However, public attention is also increasingly focused on risks such as lithium polymer batteries fire incidents and reports of exploded lithium ion battery accidents, which underline why safety standards, certified systems, and proper installation are essential as storage capacity scales up.

Large-scale energy storage projects totaling 11.5 GWh have been confirmed for commissioning, pushing national storage capacity close to 25 GWh. As more systems are installed in residential settings, guidance on how to charge into fire safety lithium-ion batteries in your home-including using certified chargers, proper ventilation, and smart battery management systems-has become just as important as performance metrics.

Manufacturers like BLOOPOWER emphasize advanced BMS design, robust cell selection, and rigorous testing to address these concerns.

Looking ahead, research models predict that by 2030 Germany's energy storage demand will rise to 100–170 GWh. Across the EU, solar generation has already surpassed lignite and hard coal, and globally solar power has exceeded hard coal generation for the first time. As this transition accelerates, combining rapid renewable growth with proven battery safety practices will be critical to sustaining confidence and unlocking the full potential of energy storage.
