The average price in the Spanish wholesale electricity market in 2025 was €65.28/MWh, remaining stable compared to the previous year and staying below €100 for the third consecutive year.

The annual average price in the Spanish wholesale electricity market in 2025 was €65.28 per megawatt-hour, close to the €63.19 per megawatt-hour recorded the previous year, marking the third consecutive year that prices remained below €100 per megawatt-hour. Such price stability has been a key topic at recent battery and energy storage conference events, where developers and policymakers discussed how energy storage can further smooth market volatility. The highest daily average price occurred on January 20th at €144.92 per megawatt-hour, while the lowest was recorded on April 19th at just €1.72 per megawatt-hour. In October, the market officially shifted its electricity price calculation cycle from hourly settlement to a 15-minute interval, creating new opportunities for battery dispatch optimization and impacting the overall battery energy storage cost per kwh through improved revenue stacking.

Spanish power grid

From January 1st to December 29th, 2025, renewable energy sources accounted for 57.6% of total electricity generation on the Iberian Peninsula, slightly down from 59% in 2024. Combined cycle generation rose nearly 34% year-on-year to reach a 15% share, becoming the fourth-largest power source. Wind power continued to lead with a 22.3% share, followed by nuclear at 20.1% and solar at 19.1%. Notably, solar power was the only major technology to achieve year-on-year growth, increasing by 12.5%, which has accelerated demand for large-scale battery energy storage system project deployments to manage intermittency. This trend has driven more collaboration between utilities and specialized battery energy storage construction company partners capable of delivering turnkey grid-scale solutions.

According to OMIP operator data, the average electricity futures price for January 2026 is forecast at €73 per megawatt-hour, with €59.95 per megawatt-hour expected for the first quarter. Analysts cited the continued expansion of renewable capacity-especially solar-as the main factor behind the downward price outlook. Recent battery energy storage news highlights how system integrators like BLOOPOWER are positioning advanced storage technologies to support grid stability, enhance renewable integration, and improve long-term market resilience across Southern Europe.
