European PV association SolarPower Europe has issued an urgent warning, calling for a 10-fold increase in battery storage capacity by 2030 in order to sustain the development of solar energy and other renewable energy sources.
Dion Sud said: "Battery storage is no longer optional – it is essential. Without urgent action, the EU risks stalling its energy transition."
As renewable energy now accounts for nearly 50% of Europe's electricity supply, the high proportion of new energy sources connected to the power system has raised higher requirements for the regulation capabilities of the power system. The EU's energy transition is facing severe challenges.
Walburga Hemetsberger, the CEO of the SolarPower Europe, pointed out that battery storage must grow at the same rate as solar installations across Europe. To achieve the EU's target for the development of solar power facilities, 1.2 TWh of storage systems need to be deployed.
The economic benefits behind this goal are enormous. By 2040, energy storage systems will save the European Union and its taxpayers 160 billion euros in costs. However, without urgent action, all of this will not be achievable.
Therefore, Europe is pushing the European Commission to adopt an "Energy Storage Action Plan", which includes five core elements: targeted incentive measures, unified licensing rules, a fair grid charging framework, prioritization of energy storage in capacity markets, and an energy storage monitoring mechanism in national energy climate plans.
