French transmission system operator Réseau de transport d'électricité (RTE) announced that it will launch a four-month public consultation on September 4th to seek opinions on its proposed €90 billion grid renovation plan. The plan mainly targets the aging infrastructure built in the 1970s and 1980s, and needs to address challenges such as extreme weather events (like floods and wildfires) and the integration of distributed energy sources. It is expected to be implemented over a period of 15 years.
RTE emphasizes that this plan is directly related to France's 2050 carbon neutrality goal, requiring a significant increase in cross-regional transmission capacity and the consumption level of renewable energy. It may become the most structurally significant energy investment in decades.
