Germany Adds a Record 7.3 GWh of Energy Storage Capacity in 2025, with Residential Systems Accounting for Approximately 80%
Germany added a record 7.3 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of energy storage capacity in 2025, surpassing the previous high of 5.8 GWh set in 2024, despite a decline in the total number of new battery installations. This growth reflects a shift toward higher-capacity systems, including advanced lithium battery energy storage system solutions and high voltage batteries for energy storage designed to support grid stability. According to the German Federal Network Agency's energy market data registry, 526,172 new energy storage systems were added in 2025, delivering a combined output of 3.7 gigawatts (GW), compared with 561,000 systems and 4.18 GW in 2024.

With these additions, the total number of operational storage systems in Germany reached 2,222,454 by the end of 2025, providing nearly 16 GW of output power and a total solar energy battery storage capacity of 25.5 GWh. Around 80% of these systems were residential photovoltaic (PV) installations, highlighting the continued dominance of home storage. Large-scale projects represented less than one-sixth of total installed capacity but played a growing strategic role in balancing renewable generation. Battery systems rated at 30 kW or below accounted for almost all new registrations in 2025, with 524,662 units contributing approximately 2.9 GW of power and 5.8 GWh of capacity.
Compared with 2024, installations in the commercial and industrial segment increased notably. In 2025, 1,427 systems with capacities ranging from 30 kWh to 1,000 kWh were commissioned, adding about 124 MW/243 MWh, up from 110 MW/190 MWh the previous year. Although large-scale storage recorded the fewest new installations-just 83 systems-it delivered a substantial 667 MW/1,244 MWh of capacity, underlining Germany's progress toward grid-scale assets comparable in scale, though not yet matching, the largest battery energy storage system in the world currently operating elsewhere.

This expansion is being driven by a combination of policy support, falling technology costs, and innovation among renewable energy battery storage companies, some of which are also exploring used electric car batteries energy storage as a cost-effective and sustainable option for second-life applications. Looking ahead, the energy market registry lists 460 planned projects with power ratings above 1 megawatt, representing a pipeline of 4.9 GW/10.13 GWh.
