India's renewable energy sector is shifting toward system strength and grid integration, with a non-fossil energy target of 500 GW by 2030.

India's renewable energy sector is undergoing a structural transformation, shifting its focus from rapid capacity expansion to building a dispatchable and resilient energy system to support the national goal of 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030. According to data from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, the country's installed renewable energy capacity has grown from less than 35 GW in 2014 to over 197 GW today, excluding large hydropower projects.

Faced with grid connection and absorption challenges, policy direction has clearly shifted toward system strength. In 2025, central government agencies will tender 5.6 GW, state agencies will tender 3.5 GW, and commercial users are expected to add nearly 6 GW. Currently, over 40 GW of projects are in the advanced stages of power purchase agreements, power sales agreements, or transmission connection, with annual capacity additions remaining between 15 and 25 GW.

Recent renewable energy tenders have focused on promoting integrated wind, solar, and storage projects and dispatchable power generation projects, with battery energy storage systems being deployed at both the grid and project levels. The production-linked incentive program, local content requirements, and the ALMM regulations are jointly promoting the development of a domestic manufacturing system, effectively reducing dependence on imports. The government has invested 2.4 trillion rupees to implement a 500 GW transmission plan, encompassing green energy corridors and high-voltage lines in Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Ladakh, expected to unlock over 200 GW of capacity potential.

Market mechanism innovation is being simultaneously promoted, with virtual power purchase agreements, green attribute trading, and the integration of day-ahead markets enhancing system flexibility. Industry investment continues to focus on comprehensive projects with energy storage, with accelerated implementation of all-weather power projects, offshore wind power, pumped storage, and distributed photovoltaic projects in Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Karnataka. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy emphasized that the current focus is on achieving high-quality growth through grid strengthening, local manufacturing, and financial stability, laying the foundation for sustainable clean energy leadership.
